History and Background of Gauhati Cine Club
The first film society of North East India was founded in Shillong. Padum Barua, Md. Sadullah and film enthusiasts formed ‘The Shillong Film Society’ in 1962. Three years after Dr. Bhupen Hazarika founded the ‘Gauhati Cine Club’ on April 26, 1965. Having crossed forty three years of its existence with proven track record the Gauhati Cine Club in Guwahati is actively performing regular rather onerous duties of a Film Society. The Club is organizing Film Appreciation Courses with experts from the field, publishing books on film and holding workshops on film craft since its inception. Our good relation with the film societies in India and the Foreign Embassies also enables the film aficionado, critics alive of the region to have a real feast of many internationally acclaimed films. The Gauhati Cine Club is constantly cooperating with the local groups to organize film societies and film festival. Our humble effort to organize film shows in schools and colleges in towns and Universities of NE region will continue in the days to come. Apart from concentrating in the film related activities we are also committed to help the people of our society at hour of grief and distress. The members of the club are always ready to extend helping hand to people during the floods providing relief and rehabilitation as well as organizing health check up camps in rural areas.
